Sweet Candle carrot seeds generate what are probably the perfect carrot variety for UK home-growers. This impressive variety will give you carrots from June right up to November, or up to five months of harvest
Sweet Candle is so good-looking it is a show winning variety and all the best growers use Sweet Candle for vegetable competitions and exhibitions. Now that's inspiration. That it has been given the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit is testament for its impressive performance.
We recommend you just provide a bit of protection from carrot fly when they are at seedling stage and grow in a light yet fertile soil and you’ll be rewarded with healthy, robust carrots – great for eating raw, grated in salads or steamed for Sunday dinner.
If you have heavy soil we recommend that you lighten it up with a bag or two of either Sharp Sand or ordinary builder's sand. Get rid of any stones in your soil as these can cause your carrots to split or grow deformed.
Whatever happens, DO NOT add fertiliser or manure to your soil prior to sowing your seeds as this will most certainly cause your crop to split and/or grow deformed.
We seriously recommend 1 of 2 ways to beat carrot fly:
1) Carrot flies fly close to the ground so either make a raised bed for them or:
2) Cover your crop with insect netting or micro mesh
