The Pepper Ciliega Piccante
seeds and plants are regarded as “Heritage Variety” – The Heritage Seed Library (HSL) aims to conserve vegetable varieties that are not widely available and they originated from Italy.
The fruits are medium hot cherry chilli, so called by its 2cm round shape as it looks a small tomato when ripe. Initially there are green 'tomato shaped' fruits which turn red, producing an early cropping on compact plants. Fruits are ideal for stuffing or as crudités for their crunchiness and good flavour. They produce a good crop throughout summer if picked regularly.
The fruit of this chilli plant loses about 60% of it's heat when cooked making it great stuffed with mozzarella and anchovies and then grilled. The general rule with chillies is the poorer the soil it is planted in, the hotter the chilli.
Serving Suggestions - Mincemeat stuffed peppers. Wash and slice the tops off the peppers, remove the seeds and membrane, stuff with pork mincemeat, coat with breadcrumbs and deep fry or bake.
